Advocacy & Campaigns- International Harm Reduction Association

Effective advocacy has been the key to advancing harm reduction initiatives around the world over the past twenty years, and coordinated advocacy activities alongside our national and international partner organisations has been a core element of IHRA’s work.

IHRA was one of the lead NGOs in coordinating international efforts to maintain support for harm reduction, and specifically needle exchange, within the HIV-prevention mandate of UN agencies. We have also played a central role in the campaign to prevent buprenorphine from being rescheduled in the international drug conventions. In 2007, IHRA initiated an international campaign against the death penalty for drug offences, and will be working to build support for this initiative with national and international NGOs over the coming months. We also work to support national campaigns wherever possible.

However, there is much more to be done in terms of promoting harm reduction and the free IHRA e-newsletter is our main way of communicating with our members and allies about our campaigns, work and projects.
