Satellite Meeting at Harm Reduction 2008: IHRA’s 19th International Conference

Organised by the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network, the OSI’s International Harm Reduction Development Program (IHRD), the OSI’s Justice Initiative and the International Centre for the Advancement of Addiction Treatment; co-sponsored by the Ministry of Justice of Catalonia; the International Affairs Directorate, Health Canada; AFEW; UNODC; WHO; and the World Bank; and supported by IHRA and the CONNECTIONS project.
Through skills-building sessions and networking opportunities, this Satellite Meeting will provide in-depth information on the following issues related to HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C and tuberculosis in prisons:
- How HIV testing and counselling and the provision of anti-retroviral treatment can successfully be scaled up in prisons
- The experience with needle and syringe programmes and opioid substitution therapies
- Pre-trial detention reform and its impact on the spread and treatment of HIV, hepatitis C and tuberculosis
- Alternatives to imprisonment
- How prisoners and former prisoners can contribute to efforts to improve health conditions in prisons
Participants will hear from prison officials, representatives of UN agencies and civil society, and former prisoners - and have the opportunity to exchange views with their colleagues during question and answer periods.

Background materials will be available in English, Spanish and Russian, and Russian and Spanish interpretation will be provided during the meeting.

Participation is free and lunch will be served for all satellite participants. Spaces are limited, so please register as soon as possible (and no later than 18 April 2008).
