DRUM: The International Network of Drug Related Media
Lunchtime Meeting at Harm Reduction 2008: IHRA’s 19th International Conference
Barcelona, Spain

Tuesday May 13th 2008
13:00 – 14:00

Organised by Black Poppy (UK) and Auto-Support Des Usagers de Drogues (ASUD)

Throughout the drugs field in recent years, people and organisations have been making innovative use of technology; creating web-logs, websites, online magazines and hardcopy publications. Many however, are working in isolation with few opportunities to exchange information, skills or resources.

In order to encourage discussion, debate and collaboration, this special lunchtime meeting aims to bring together key personnel from harm reduction magazines and websites, drug user focused magazines, and other drug related publications in order to tease out ways in which we may, as an international network of alliances and contacts, exchange information, ideas and knowledge for the benefit of our publications and our readers.

Through this meeting, the organisers hope to develop a database linking key international drug and harm reduction media personnel – with a view to creating a much needed network, website resource, communication tool and/or e-forum for this field.

To provide inspiration and ideas, the session will include a review of the experiences from the International Network of Street Papers (INSP) - formed in 1994 to unite street publications from around the world, including the chance to hear from a variety of the world’s drug related health and harm reduction writers / editors.

If you write content for a drug-related or harm reduction publication or drug user magazine, website or web-log, we want to hear your views, your ideas, your challenges and your successes.

This meeting will be immediately followed by a ‘Living Room’ session entitled ‘Drug User Magazines: A Voice – A View – A Vehicle for Change’, which will provide a more focused discussion about drug user publications from around the world. There will be presentations from user magazines from Australia, France, UK, Germany and Canada to discuss issues around funding, censorship, marketing strategies, drug culture, politics and magazine survival.
