Drug users, especially injecting drug users, are at increased risk of developing tuberculosis (TB) - a risk that is further increased in those who are co-infected with HIV. Tuberculosis, HIV and drug use are intertwined - but services are often very separate and not holistic in providing access in a practical way for people who use drugs. Although the TB/HIV co-epidemic was recognised as far back as 20 years ago, standard approaches to TB/HIV service provision for drug users have not yet been developed and validated.
This session will look at how to prevent, diagnose and treat HIV-related TB in drug users. It will also introduce the WHO/UNODC/UNAIDS Guidelines, which are currently under development to support best practice in this area. There will then be presentations about TB/HIV amongst people who use drugs, and the session will continue in an interactive and participatory way. All conference delegates are welcome to attend this meeting and join in with the discussions with their own questions and experience.
