The Obama Administration’s fresh approach to international drug and HIV/AIDS policy at the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) meeting taking place in Vienna has been warmly welcomed by the International Harm Reduction Association (IHRA).

The Mauritian Prime Minister’s recent announcement that he was planning to reintroduce the death penalty in an attempt to reduce drug trafficking in the country, if successfully passed, would bring on a public health disaster and drive injecting drug use underground in a country where some 90 per cent of HIV infections are among injecting drug users (IDUs), the International Harm Reduction Association (IHRA) said today.

A new study by researchers for the 2009 Reference Group to the UN on HIV and Injecting Drug Use, published in The Lancet has confirmed fears that injecting drug users (IDUs) have become the neglected population in the fight against HIV which in turn is producing a spiralling public health crisis across many parts of the globe, said the International Harm Reduction Association (IHRA).
