(2004) Evaluation of carcinogen exposure in people who used “reduced exposure” tobacco products. Journal of the National Cancer Institute, 96, 844-852.
This study shows that switching to reduced exposure tobacco products can decrease carcinogens, although an even greater reduction was recorded for medicinal nicotine.

(1987) Does switching from cigarettes to pipes or cigars reduce tobacco smoke exposure? American Journal of Public Health, 77(11), 1412-1416.
This early research showed that pipe or cigar smokers had lower serum thiocyanate levels than cigarette smokers. However, people who switched from cigarettes to pipes or cigars had higher levels than those who have only smoked pipes or cigars, possibly due to compensatory smoking. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide free access to this article.
