Conference Partners - Thailand

In order to assist IHRA and the Conference Consortium, a small number of organisations have been invited to be ‘Conference Partners’ for Harm Reduction 2009. These organisations have been chosen for their importance to harm reduction in the host region and country. They support and endorse the conference by directly facilitating its delivery in a number of ways – such as making financial contributions, identifying sponsors, advocating for the event at the local level, promoting the conference whenever possible, supporting the day-to-day logistics and management of the event, and working with the Executive Programme Committee to ensure the success and relevance of the event.

The Harm Reduction 2009 Conference Partners are:

The Asian Harm Reduction Network (AHRN) is the regional information and support network created to link and support those operating harm reduction programmes or providing assistance to people who use drugs across the continent. Hundreds of individuals and organisations contribute to the network's development, and AHRN is recognised by UNAIDS as a best practice model, and by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a key partner in the response to HIV/AIDS in Asia. AHRN also works alongside numerous governments and NGOs, and is involved in five main activities - networking, information sharing, advocacy and support for harm reduction, programme and policy development, and training and capacity building.

Population Services International (PSI) is the leading non-profit social marketing organisation in the world, addressing the health problems of low-income and vulnerable populations in more than 60 developing countries. With programmes in malaria, reproductive health, child survival and HIV, PSI promotes products, services and healthy behaviours that enable low-income and vulnerable people to lead healthier lives. PSI was founded in 1970 to improve reproductive health using commercial marketing strategies and, for its first 15 years, worked mostly in family planning. PSI has since expanded its profile, however, and estimates that its programmes directly prevented more than 156,000 HIV infections in 2007.

The Raks Thai Foundation was established in 1997 and evolved from the CARE International country office for Thailand. As such, Raks Thai has the experience of CARE Thailand (which began in 1979) and is currently also a member of CARE International. Raks Thai programmes focus on health and HIV/AIDS, micro-enterprise development, community management of natural resources, education, and disaster relief and preparedness. In 2005, Raks Thai became the ‘Principal Recipient’ for a project on ‘Care and Support for Injecting Drug Users’ (CASIDU) which is supported by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. This project is a collaborative effort with a number of other Thai partners in order to deliver harm reduction services and advocate for favourable government actions and policies towards people who use drugs. Currently, the Raks Thai Foundation runs two harm reduction drop-in centres near to Bangkok.

The Thai Red Cross Society was founded in 1893 as a humanitarian organisation under the patronage of H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej – with H.M. Queen Sirikit as President and H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn as Executive Vice-President. In the spirit outlined by the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement – who are themselves a Supporting Organisation for the event – the Thai Red Cross Society is committed to promoting the ideals of the Red Cross to alleviate human suffering and to provide health services to the most vulnerable. The activities of the Thai Red Cross Society are focused in four areas – medical and health care services, providing blood and related services, disaster preparedness and response, and alleviating human suffering and improving quality of life. The Society enlists the cooperation of young people and volunteers, and strives to build a dynamic organisation that enhances the quality of its services and capacity building.
