Film Festival – Thailand

Overview

Film has the capacity to educate, inform and entertain, and can impact upon the way that we perceive complex social phenomenon such as substance misuse. The medium of film provides an opportunity to unravel the complexities associated with drug use, and also provides an enhanced experience for receiving and understanding information.

The International Drugs and Harm Reduction Film Festival has accompanied the annual IHRA conferences since 2004 and has become an integral, popular and invaluable component of the overall event. This innovative international festival has taken place in Melbourne (2004), Belfast (2005), Vancouver (2006), Warsaw (2007) and Barcelona (2008). Since it’s inception, this event has been able to provide unique perspectives on harm reduction, drug use, minorities, poverty, organised crime and human rights – as seen through the film-makers’ lens.

Since 2004, the Film Festival Team – based at the Burnet Institute in Australia – has accumulated up to 250 documentaries from over 25 countries. Preparations are currently underway to build upon this collection and put together an impressive programme for the 6th International Drugs and Harm Reduction Film Festival in Bangkok, Thailand in April 2009.

Meet the Team

The Film Festival is managed by Peter Higgs, Greg Denham and Rebecca Winter from the Burnet Institute in Australia, and Gary Reid from UNESCO in India. Known collectively as the ‘Film Festival Team’, they are responsible for reviewing hours of material to put together the Film Festival programme for 2009.

Abstract Submission for 2009

In April 2009, the 6th International Drugs and Harm Reduction Film Festival will be integrated as a parallel track in the conference programme for Harm Reduction 2009 in Bangkok, Thailand. For the sixth year in a row, the Film Festival Team will aim to collect a huge range of films – from animations to documentaries, art house to education – provided they relate to drugs and harm reduction. If you are interested in submitting a film and showcasing your work in Bangkok, please complete the Call for Film Submissions form.

All films must be submitted with a hard copy and an electronic copy of the submission form by January 15th 2009. Presenters must also register for the conference.

Sponsorship Opportunities

IHRA, the Conference Consortium and the Film Festival Team are currently seeking sponsorship and support to help maintain the high standards achieved by the International Drugs and Harm Reduction Film Festival in the past five years, and to extend it’s scope and take it to a new level of exposure and quality.
